Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of disorders that affect a person’s ability to move and maintain balance and posture caused by damage occurring to the developing brain, most often before birth.

Some of the most common symptoms include:

Movement and coordination

  • Stiff muscles and exaggerated reflexes
  • Too stiff or too floppy muscle tone
  • Stiff muscles with normal reflexes
  • Lack of balance and muscle coordination
  • Tremors or jerky involuntary movements
  • Slow, writhing movements
  • Difficulty walking
  • Difficulty with fine motor skills

Speech and eating

  • Delays in speech development
  • Excessive drooling or problems with swallowing
  • Difficulty with sucking, chewing or eating

Development

  • Delays in reaching motor skills milestones
