Eliminating barriers to opportunity

Intellectual disability is a term used when a person has certain limitations in cognitive functioning and skills or learning at an expected level and function in daily life. Children with intellectual disabilities might take more time or learn differently than other children.

According to the American Association of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, an individual has an intellectual disability if he or she meets three criteria:

  1. IQ is below 70-75
  2. There are significant limitations in two or more adaptive areas
  3. The condition manifests itself before the age of 18

Signs of intellectual disability may include:

  • sit up, crawl, or walk later than other children
  • learn to talk later, or have trouble speaking
  • have difficulty in remembering things
  • have difficulty understanding social rules
  • have trouble seeing the results of their actions
  • have trouble solving problems
